The History of Tires

Tire is a kind of circular elastic rubber product which is assembled on all kinds of vehicles or machines. Usually installed on the metal rim, it can support the body, buffer the external impact, achieve the contact with the road and ensure the driving performance of the vehicle.

1. Tire Introduction

Tires are often used in complex and harsh conditions. They bear various deformation, load, force and high and low temperature effects when driving, so they must have high bearing capacity, traction performance and cushioning performance. At the same time, it is also required to have high wear resistance and flexing flexibility, as well as low rolling resistance and heat generation. Half of the world's rubber consumption is used in tire production, which shows the tire's ability to consume rubber.

Automobile tire can be divided into pneumatic tire and solid tire according to different carcass structure. The vast majority of modern cars use pneumatic tires.

2. Tire Development History

(1) The First Tires

The earliest tires were made of wood or iron, as can be seen from ancient Chinese chariots and foreign gentlemen carriages. Later, when Columbus, the explorer, made his second exploration of the new world to the island of Haiti in the West Indies in 1493-1496, he was surprised to find the rubber lumps played by local children. Later, he brought this wonderful thing back to his homeland. Several years later, rubber was widely used, and the wheels were gradually made of hard rubber instead of wood. But at this time, the rubber tires are still solid, uncomfortable to walk, and noisy.

(2) The First Pneumatic Tire

In 1845, R. W. Thomson, a Scottish born civil engineer, invented pneumatic tires and obtained a patent from the British government under the title of ‘wheel improvement of carriages and other vehicles’. On December 10 of the same year, the first pneumatic tire was born. The first person to buy pneumatic tires is Luolie, who is a noble. The price of four tires is 44 pounds and two shillings. In 1847, Science·America magazine introduced Thomson's pneumatic tire, calling it a epoch-making improvement. However, at that time, Britain paid too much attention to the traditional gentrification. In order to protect the carriage and limit the development of steam cars, the speed of cars was limited to 2mile (about 3.2km) in urban areas and 4mile (about 6.4km) in suburbs. In this way, Thomson's invention had no market, so it was gradually forgotten.

(3) Pneumatic Tire Patented

More than 40 years later, in 1888, Mr. J. B. Dunlop, an Englishman who worked as a vet in Ireland, obtained a patent for pneumatic tires. At that time, Johnny, Mr. J. B. Dunlop's 10-year-old son, bought a three-wheel bicycle. But because the tire at that time were solid tyres made of hard rubber, so it was uncomfortable to walk on the road full of stones. His son's complaints inspired Mr. Dunlop, so the pneumatic tyres, which had been forgotten for more than 40 years, came out again. With the progress of the times, the pneumatic tire invented by Mr. Dunlop has been applied in the bicycle very quickly, and it has made great contribution to the development of the world automobile industry.

(4) Carcass of Pneumatic Tire

In the early stage of pneumatic tire, the rubber coated canvas was used as the carcass. Because the vertical and horizontal lines of the canvas cross each other, and the lines rub with each other due to the deformation of the tires when walking. Thus, the lines are easy to be worn off, and the tires can only run 200-300km at this time. In 1903, Mr. J. F. Palmer invented twill textile, which contributed to the development of cross ply tire and made the life of tire take a big step forward. Because the carcass of the diagonal fork can no longer cause friction due to the walking of the tire, the cord is not easy to be worn off, so the service life is greatly longer.

Michelin made the first tubeless tire in 1930 and invented the world famous radial tire in 1946.

The development of tire has experienced a long process. Several generations have paid hard work and superb wisdom for it.

Every car owner also should pay more attention to the condition of car tire, such as installing a TPMS(tire pressure monitoring system
