What Are the Marks on the Tires?

Tire is an important part of automobile. There are more than 10 kinds of marks on the tire. It is very important to correctly identify these marks for tire selection, use and maintenance. It is of great significance to ensure driving safety and extend the service life of tires

1. Tire Specification

The specification is the sign data of tire geometric parameters and physical properties. There are three ways to express tire specifications.

A. Metric system (m)

B. Metric British system hybrid

C. British system

The British system tire specifications are usually represented by a group of numbers. The former number represents the tire section width, and the latter number represents the rim diameter, all in inches.

2. Tire Structure

"R" refers to radial tire. "D" and "—" refers to bias tire.

"XL" refers to locally reinforced tyres. "TG" refers to engineering tractor and flat tire (for off-road use). "NHS" refers to off-road use tires

3. Level

Level refers to the nominal number of plies in the rubber layer of tire. It is not completely consistent with the actual number of plies, and is an important indicator of tire strength. The level shall be marked in Chinese, such as level 12. If marked in English, ‘14P. R represents level 14.

4. Cord Material

Some tires are marked separately, such as "nylon", generally after the level. Some tire manufacturers mark after the specification, which is represented by the first letter of Chinese Pinyin, such as 9.00-20N, 7.50-20G, etc. N represents nylon. G represents steel wire. M represents cotton thread. R represents rayon.

5. Load and Air Pressure

The maximum load and corresponding air pressure are generally indicated. The unit of load is "kg". The air pressure is the tire pressure, and the unit is "kpa".

6. Rim Specification

It indicates the rim size used to match the tire. It is convenient for practical usage, such as "standard rim 5.00F".

7. Balance Mark

It is made of colored rubber and printed on the sidewall to indicate that it is the lightest here. When assembling, it should face the valve to ensure the balance of the whole tire.

8. Rolling Direction

The tread pattern on the tire is particularly critical to the drainage and anti-skid during driving, so the off-road vehicle tire with asymmetric tread pattern is often equipped with an arrow to mark the rolling direction, so as to ensure the designed adhesion, anti-skid and other performance.

9. Wear Limit Sign

Rubber strips and blocks are used on one side of the tire to mark the wear limit of the tire. Once the tire wear reaches the mark position, it shall be replaced in time, otherwise the tire will burst halfway due to insufficient strength.

10. Production Batch Number

A group of numbers and letters are used to indicate the manufacturing year and quantity of tires. For example, "98N08B5820" means the 5820th tire produced in group B in August 1998. The production batch number is used to identify the old and new degree and storage time of tires.

11. Trademark

The trademark is the mark of the tire manufacturer, including the text and pattern of the trademark, which is generally prominent, eye-catching and easy to identify. Most of them are connected with the name of the manufacturer.

12. Other Marks

Other marks include product grade, production license number and other auxiliary marks. It can be used as reference and information for selection.

Tire markings are generally standardized. So tyres can be purchased and used safely after being identified clearly.
